9 April 2001
Stand No F101, Ifsec 2001, 21 to 24 May, NEC Birmingham
The Databac Group, specialist provider of identification solutions, will be unveiling the prototypes of an exciting new family of PET card products suitable for direct printing, at Ifsec 2001. Developed using Dupont Teijin Films' latest Melinex® polyester film range, the new card boasts all the advantages of PET - durable, flexible, recyclable and less harmful to the environment - and combines it with the robustness of a manufacturing process traditionally used for PVC cards.
Platen pressing ensures a molecular bond between layers of Melinex® PET, creating a strong, solid, ISO-standard card, unequalled in the industry. Its unique properties make it suitable for all applications, from driving licences, access control, identification and transport, to military, government and loyalty.
Databac claims its new card is vastly superior to any PVC or composite card product on the market, in terms of temperature stability, flexibility and durability - with a lifespan estimated to exceed 10 years. The new material offers greater print quality from direct card printers, giving more photographic realism and sharper, brighter images.
"Our Melinex® polyester film range is designed specifically for the laminated cards market and Databac's knowledge and experience has been of tremendous value in testing this material. Databac has a proven track record in polyester film cards and we were keen to have its support with our next generation of films," said Debbie Stephenson, DTF European marketing manager.
Databac can produce the cards either plain unprinted - for full personalisation by using a direct card printer - or can offer customisation by preprinting with corporate graphics, security backgrounds and other information. Additional security options can also be included during manufacture such as preprinting with ultra-violet and other security inks or the application of 2D/3D holograms and other optical variable devices. The new cards can include most reading technologies such as magnetic stripe, smart chip, and barcode.
Databac's new card is positioned between the company's flagship product, the market-leading all-polyester TOUGH card, and Duracard, Databac's PVC/polyester composite card.
Visitors to Databac's stand (no. F101) at Ifsec will also be able to see the company's full range of ID solutions, including its systems for card printing, visitor control and event registration, a host of card wearing accessories and Databac's complete family of cards and badges.

About TOUGH card©
TOUGH card is constructed of layers of polyester/polyethylene for ultimate flexibility, unlike the rigid, homogenous structure of PVC which is prone to cracking and breaking. This unique polyester has an amorphous surface which opens out to allow the thermal dyes to penetrate the outer coating of the card. The surface then closes up and forms a protective coating over the printed area. TOUGH card is highly resistant to warping, abrasion and temperature extremes and has a longer flex life than ordinary vinyls.
