Databac Group, specialist provider of identification solutions, has
developed a versatile range of rewritable ID cards. Called Data ReWrite,
the cards are ideal for use as a promotional tool in loyalty schemes and
bring massive cost-savings to visitor ID and other applications with a
fast, high turnover of cards. Data ReWrite cards can be tailor-made to
client specifications, with a choice of materials, reading technologies,
pre-printing and security options, making them the most flexible range
manufactured in Europe today. Compatible with all leading rewritable card
printers, the cards can be erased and reprinted more than 500 times*.
Databac managing director Charles Balcomb commented: "Recent launches of
rewritable printers such as Datacard's high-spec SP25, together with ever
more sophisticated marketing techniques, mean that the market is ripe for
rewritable cards. Cards are an interface between company and client which
until now has remained largely unexploited. Rewritable cards open up a
world of possibilities in terms of personalised marketing communications."
In customer loyalty applications, reward points can be printed each time
the card is presented at the cash register. Libraries can print a list of
borrowed books and their due dates, minimising books returned late and
saving on reminder notices. When used for cashless vending, remaining
credit can be printed each time a purchase is made. Student cards can
feature class schedules. Ski-passes, hotel keycards and patient ID in
hospitals join a long list of potential applications.
"When used in visitor ID and similar applications, Data ReWrite cards
significantly affect the bottom line," continued Balcomb. "With 500 uses
out of each card, there is minimal wastage. Instead, Data ReWrite cards
bring all the benefits of corporate branding, full personalisation options
including photo ID and total integration with access control systems."
Data ReWrite cards are the result of Databac's ongoing research and
development into new materials, technologies and applications. Manufactured
in its secure production facility, the cards can be preprinted with
corporate graphics and security backgrounds. Contact and contactless chip,
Wiegand Wire, magnetic stripe and other ID technologies can be incorporated
to enable their use with multiple automated systems. The cards are
available in PET, PVC, ABS and composite materials, for required levels of
durability.

Editors' notes
Data ReWrite cards can be used with standard colour card printers and the
new generation of rewritable card printers. At their core, Data ReWrite
cards feature a thermal recording material containing Leuco dye and a
developer substance. When heated to around 170ºC, followed by a quick
cooling process, the dye reacts with the developer to a melted state, in
such a way that the dye becomes visible. To erase the print, the material
is heated to a lower temperature, typically around 120ºC, followed by a
slow cooling process, which realigns the dye molecules to their original
state where they are no longer visible. Depending on the printer used, the
erase/print process takes just a few seconds, with excellent resolution of
image. The rewritable element of Data ReWrite cards can be printed in
black, red or blue, also depending on the printer.
